Mr. Go getter, Ms. Shy, Mr. Confused, Ms. know it all ….. all facades …believe it or not, the question “Am I worth it” plagues everyone’s mind. The insecurity of …. Am I justifying my job…..Am I better than the next joe/jane …. Will my work get the much needed adulation …. Will my boss appreciate me ….. Is that guy/girl better than me …. Is a bane of each professional’s life.
This underlying need of acceptance and appreciation forces a self motivated person to out do himself/herself on each given opportunity. These people though being greatest assets for the organization are highly vulnerable and least conducive to criticism however constructive.
These people can get into throes of depression easily and can also bounce back and may even perform better on being ridiculed. But a word of caution for employers of such people:
- Do not put them in situation without proper authority and clarity of thought process. At least ensure that the goal is understood.
- Do not unduly dominate or micro manage them.
- Give them the freedom to work and comfort of being their guardian angel.
- Do not put them in roles for which their skillset is unsuitable as that would render them not only helpless but also with a diminished confidence level.
But what about the average jane and joe. Where do they go. They are not extraordinarily talented but they slog day and night and fulfill their responsibilities. Aren’t they important????
A few ground rules people, follow them and you will never face this mind numbing question
- Respect your Individuality.
- Know your limitations and your greatest strengths.
- You need to give your 100% and a little more to your assigned tasks.
- You need to be content of what you have done and should not feel that you purposefully missed something.
- Believe in one thing … that if you are employable …. You have nothing to fear…. You will always get work, be it in current or a new workplace….
So don’t look for acceptance. Don’t judge yourself on the basis of a smile of a boss or smirk on the face of peer. They will effect your EQ and your self esteem only if you let them matter.
So tie your shoes laces, slick back your hair, wear your beautiful smile and go rule the world and don’t ask “ Am I worth it” – believe that “ You are worth it”.
